Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A ballot measure phasing out Oregon’s estate tax has been rejected. Oregon’s estate tax is assessed on the portion of an inheritance above $1 million. Proponents of Measure 84 say the tax threatens small businesses and family farms, which might have assets above $1 million but not enough cash to cover the tax bill. Opponents say the measure is a giveaway to the wealthy and would only benefit 2 percent of the richest taxpayers as the state struggles to fund schools and police.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon voters have rejected a ballot measure seeking to regulate marijuana like alcohol. The measure would have given Oregon one of the laxest state laws concerning marijuana use in the nation. Oregon was one of the first states to allow medicinal use of pot, which voters approved in 1998. Measure 80 would’ve gone further, regulating it like alcohol.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon will not see a new casino open in Multnomah County. Voters rejected two ballot measures that would have allowed a new casino in Wood Village, east of Portland. Two Canadian companies and a pair of businessmen from Lake Oswego fought hard to convince voters to approve the casino, but they abandoned their campaign when polls showed that voters were overwhelmingly opposed.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Democrat Kate Brown has won a second term as Oregon Secretary of State. Brown survived a tough challenge from Republican Knute Buehler, an orthopedic surgeon from Bend who tried to portray Brown as inept and uninspiring. She was helped by a late barrage of negative advertising funded by unions and a top Democratic Party donor.
