PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A minor earthquake with a 3.1 magnitude was recorded at 6:15 this morning in the Portland area. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network reports the quake was centered about 11 miles northwest of Portland at a depth of 12 miles. Emergency dispatchers told KGW they received several calls from people who felt it, but no reports of damage.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber has ordered flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff today in honor of Army Capt. James Nehl (NEE-ul). The 37-year-old Nehl died earlier this month while conducting combat operations in southeastern Afghanistan. He was from Gardiner in Douglas County. Kitzhaber said Nehl’s commitment to his nation is inspiring, yet his death is a tragic loss and a reminder of the burden our military and their families continue to bear.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police say the driver of a speeding SUV was killed when it crashed into a building in Salem. A patrol officer saw the car traveling at a high rate of speed Sunday but lost sight of it. The wreck was found a short time later. The driver died at the scene. He’s identified as 33-year-old Eduardo Maza-Meraz of Albany. The building was not occupied.

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – The state of Oregon has withdrawn more than 900 acres of planned timber sales in Elliott State Forest, pending the outcome of an environmental lawsuit. The World reports the Oregon Department of Forestry plans instead to open 465 acres of alternative logging sites that were not named in the lawsuit. Environmental groups sued to protect the endangered marbled murrelet sea bird.
