PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A suburban Portland mall remains closed a day after a gunman wearing camouflage and a mask opened fire on shoppers, killing two people and wounding a third, before killing himself. Police said the shooter is believed to have fired an assault rifle at random before taking his own life at the Clackamas Town Center. There’s no known connection between the gunman and those he shot.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said today a gunman who killed two people, wounded a young woman and then took his own life was targeting strangers. Roberts told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that the man “was really trying to kill as many people as possible.” Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland says the survivor — identified as Kristina Shevchenko — is in serious condition.
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Police in Springfield say a teenager carrying two air rifles to school for a project caused a scare that prompted a temporary lockdown of several schools. Security measures were beefed up yesterday morning after a passer-by who saw the teen contacted police. But police tell The Register-Guard that officers searched the area and determined the youth was a high school student with two air rifles that were intended to be used as “props.”
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon epidemiologist says about 90 of the 220 medical professionals who attended a private meeting at the Oregon Zoo became ill. Oregon Public Health’s Dr. Katrina Hedberg says no one was hospitalized but those who developed gastro-intestinal symptoms were very ill. She tells The Oregonian that the highly contagious norovirus is “the most likely culprit.”
