PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say a woman in her 20s was stabbed by a stranger without provocation. Police say the assailant, another woman, walked up to the victim and stabbed her last night. The victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for a non-life-threatening injury. Police officers canvassed the neighborhood but did not find the suspect.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The former Eugene Water & Electric Board Commissioner has accepted $87,000 from the city of Eugene to settle the lawsuit she filed claiming that police used excessive force in a raid on her home in 2009. The city does not admit any liability as part of the settlement with JoAnn Ernst, nor does it agree with Ernst’s allegations. The predawn raid included the use of percussion grenades, one of which hit one of Ernst’s adult daughters on the head while she lay in her bed.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Dungeness crab season in Oregon and southern Washington starts Monday at 12:01 a.m. after a month-long delay caused by insufficient meat content. The season typically opens Dec. 1, but can be pushed back to ensure better quality. A spokesman for the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission says it was disappointing not to have fresh crab for Christmas but waiting until they were nice and full was the right thing to do. Crabbers can start setting their pots in the ocean at 8 a.m. today.
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) – The executive editor of the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore., has been named to the same post at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The Florida newspaper announced on its website Thursday that 54-year-old Bill Church will begin work at the Herald-Tribune on Jan. 24. He replaces Mike Connelly, who left in October to lead the newsroom at The Buffalo News.
