EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Sheriff’s officers in Oregon’s Lane County have recovered the body of a man they think is a 27-year-old who disappeared in Douglas County last month. Officials say the body was found yesterday on the north side of Dorena Lake, southeast of Cottage Grove. The Douglas County sheriff’s office was contacted last week by relatives of Brian Trumbo, who hadn’t been in touch with them since Dec. 11. He reportedly left his home in Oakland, Ore., and was traveling in a green Ford Expedition.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say the New Year’s holiday traffic death toll of 12 people in four accidents is the highest since the state Transportation Department began keeping such statistics in 1970. This year’s toll includes the nine people killed in the Dec. 30 bus crash on Interstate 84 in the Pendleton area. Lt. Gregg Hastings says three of the holiday crashes and 11 of the deaths occurred on I-84. The 102-hour reporting period started at 6 p.m. Dec. 28 and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 1.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon legislators at their upcoming session will consider a bill to impose a per-mile charge on super-efficient or battery-powered cars. Government has long collected money at the gasoline pump to pay for building and fixing roads. Officials in Oregon and elsewhere have been trying to figure out how to raise that money from vehicles that use the roads but use gasoline sparingly or not at all. The Salem Statesman Journal reports the Oregon bill would require cars that get at least 55 miles per gallon, or the equivalent, to report their mileage. That could be done with a smartphone app, or through GPS technology.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say they’ve made an arrest in a carjacking reported yesterday afternoon. Officer Pete Simpson says a man walked up to a woman in an SUV in a northeast Portland shoe store parking lot, pulled her out of the vehicle and drove off. Responding Port of Portland police spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it by bumping it but it reversed direction and kept going. A Portland officer tried a second bumping maneuver and got the SUV stopped. Simpson says 18-year-old Devon Mack was arrested for investigation of robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, reckless driving and DUI.
