PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The father of an Oregon terrorism suspect says his then-teenage son was suffering an identity crisis and enduring a troubled home life when the FBI “brainwashed” him. Osman Barre (OHS’-man BAR’-ee), the father of Somali-American terrorism suspect Mohamed Mohamud, testified yesterday that he was concerned for his son’s safety when he contacted the FBI in 2009. He says contemporary news accounts of Somali-American teenagers joining the mujahedeen in Somalia led him to contact the FBI and say he feared his son was being brainwashed by al-Qaida recruiters. Barre was the first defense witness.
PACIFIC, Wash. (AP) – It’s been nearly three years since Kyron Horman disappeared from a Portland school where his stepmother says she dropped him off. An age-progression photo to show what he would look like now has been released in a poster from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The poster is seen on the Gordon Trucking fleet in Washington and Oregon. No arrests have been made in Kyron’s disappearance. Terri Horman is the last person known to have seen him.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon University System will pay ousted chancellor George Pernsteiner for a year after he leaves the job. The State Board of Higher Education unanimously approved a severance agreement yesterday. Pernsteiner says he’s stepping down as chancellor because board members want new leadership. Under the negotiated deal, Pernsteiner will stay in the job until March 1 and then work a month on a special project. He’ll collect his salary for 12 months unless he takes another job.
WILSONVILLE, Ore. (AP) – Wilsonville police say a man who told them he’d been drinking and taking prescription medication has called them to confess to killing a puppy hours after buying it for $300 from a pet store. The police identified the man Monday as 28-year-old Kevin Lee Slabaugh. He’s accused of aggravated animal abuse. The police said he called 911 Sunday to report killing the 2-month-old dog the night before. Officers said he led them to the body but couldn’t offer an explanation for his actions.
