Viking Wrestlers advance; Boys Basketball Tiebreaker; Pac-12 results

Two Siuslaw Vikings will be on the mats this weekend at the state 4A Wrestling finals in Portland.  285 pounder Ryan Connor claimed the individual Southwest Oregon Region title at that weight class Saturday.  Hayden Miles was third at 152 pounds.  Both earned the right to advance to Portland’s Memorial Coliseum Friday and Saturday.

Viking coach Neil Wartnik said Turner Wyckoff was also very close to qualifying at 182; he finished fifth.  Two Vikings were sixth in their classes… Isaiah Burkhalter at 113 and Travis Dahlberg at 145.

Basketball 

There will be a boys Far West basketball tie-breaker tomorrow night in Bandon as the Siuslaw Vikings face the Brookings-Harbor Bruins.  Siuslaw downed South Umpqua Friday night 59 – 45.  Jake Thompson had 26 points; Samuel Johnson had 16 as the Vikings pushed the Lancers into 5th place.  Brookings-Harbor fell to Sutherlin 63- 50 to leave the Vikings and the Bruins in a tie for third.

For the girls, Siuslaw ended the season on a two game win streak, downing the South Umpqua Lancers 47 – 25.  Alex Dodson had 14 points, Ashlee Cole 16.  In other Far West games… Sutherlin remained undefeated… but just barely.  They edged Brookings-Harbor 42 – 41 in overtime.  Douglas beat North Bend 50 – 41.

In Medford, the Reedsport Girls started the weekend with a 46 – 40 win over Chiloquin in a district playoff game.  The Lady Braves then fell to Lost River 51- 25 Saturday to end their season.

Pac 12 Basketball

Oregon’s E.J. Singler made two free-throws with four seconds remaining to lift Number 23 Oregon to a 79 – 77 overtime win over Washington State.  Singler had 25 of Oregon’s points and the Ducks stay alone atop the Pac-12 conference.

In Seattle, the Washington Huskies pulled away late for a 72 – 62 win over Oregon State.  The win ended a three game losing streak for the Dawgs.
