SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state House is scheduled to vote today on a measure allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition if they graduated from an Oregon high school. The House has rejected similar measures twice before after they were passed by the Senate. This time, the measure has strong support from majority Democrats and some Republicans and is expected to pass. Critics say the state shouldn’t subsidize college tuition for people who can’t legally work in the United States.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Jurors in Eugene have rejected all claims in a lawsuit filed by a former local radio personality who said he faced such intense verbal abuse on a program called “The Donkey Show” that he was forced to quit. The Register-Guard reports the jury took less than two hours yesterday to reach a decision, awarding no damages to Michael Fleming. He contended the on-air insults created such a toxic work environment that he feared for his safety and had to quit.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say an unloaded logging truck hit and killed two elk on Highway 101 yesterday on the coast near Newport. Troopers say one of the elk became lodged under the steering axle which caused the driver to lose control. The truck skidded 180 feet and rolled on its side down a small embankment. The driver was not injured. But, about 50 gallons of diesel leaked from a tank. Highway 101 was closed about four hours.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Residents in Bend were stunned to look outside after a loud boom and see a garbage truck engulfed in flames. KTVZ-TV reports no one was hurt when the disposal truck caught fire yesterday afternoon. Fire officials say a hydraulic arm on the device that reaches out to grab a garbage can failed, spraying flammable hydraulic fluid onto the hot engine’s surface. The driver quickly called 911.
