Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Deputies say they arrested a 41-year-old Medford-area man after he fired shots in the neighborhood where residents say there have been months of complaints over loud music at his home. The Jackson County sheriff’s office says Jon Ware threatened to shoot neighbors who approached his home and fired a rifle in their direction.
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Two men have been found dead outside an abandoned downtown Springfield building frequented by homeless campers and drug users. Police Sgt. David Lewis told The Register-Guard illegal activities are suspected in the deaths. A passer-by reported seeing two men apparently passed out in a breezeway of the former office building and about an hour later another person called 911 and said they were dead.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man convicted of murder in the 1993 slayings of two women in Portland is being released from prison today. Scott William Cox of Newberg was sentenced to 25 years, and with time off for good behavior and credit for time spent in jail, his term is up. The Oregonian reports he’ll live in subsidized housing while he looks for work. If Cox had been convicted in 1995, after Oregon voters approved Measure 11, he would have been sentenced to at least 50 years in prison.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber will brief other state leaders this weekend on his plan to lower Medicaid costs, touting an overhaul that President Barack Obama highlighted in his State of the Union address for its potential to lower the deficit even as health care expenses climb. The Oregon Democrat leaves for Washington, D.C., today to pitch his plan that changes the way doctors and hospitals are paid and improves health care coordination for low income residents so that treatable medical problems don’t grow in severity or expense.
