GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. (AP) – Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies say a 17-year-old snowboarder who reported he was lost on Mount Hood has been found by ski patrol members of the Ski Bowl resort. They say the initial report came in late yesterday afternoon and Cody Johnson of Gresham was rescued unhurt by 7:30 p.m. The deputy says an initial investigation showed the boy had snowboarded in an area posted as out of bounds.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police fired tear gas into a Portland airport hotel room early today to end a three-hour standoff with a man who refused to leave the room and was suspected of being armed. Neighboring rooms at the Travelodge hotel were evacuated shortly after midnight and a street was closed as the SWAT Team moved in. Officers fired tear gas about 3:45 a.m. and the 34-year-old man surrendered.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Leaders of Oregon’s cities and school districts want voters to undo some of the stringent restrictions they placed on property taxes in the 1990s. Several mayors and school-board members made their case to state lawmakers yesterday. They say property-tax limits from two ballot measures hamper their ability to pay for police and fire services, libraries, parks, road maintenance and teachers.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – Board members for the Umatilla County Fair say they’re considering a new smoking restriction policy that would be phased in over two years. The East Oregonian reports that the board is responding to a request from members of a 4-H club. The youngsters say they experienced cigarette smoke drifting into camping areas and animal barns during fair week in the summer.
