SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Rangers pitching prospect Martin Perez broke his left forearm when hit by a line drive and will not throw for about four weeks, and Texas gave up homers to Kendrys Morales and Jesus Montero in a 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners yesterday. The 21-year-old left-hander Perez was struck by a liner off Brad Miller’s bat. Perez dropped to the ground as the ball deflected off his arm, just above his wrist for an infield single. X-rays revealed he broke his left ulna. Perez will not likely be able to throw until early April. Morales homered in the first, a two-run shot. Montero connected in the seventh.

Suggs’ 3 from the top of the key snapped a 57-all tie. It was his fifth 3-pointer, tying his career high, and he added four more free throws as the Huskies took a 65-57 lead with 2:28 left. Brock Motum and Royce Woolridge scored 18 each for Washington State, but the Cougars’ worst slide since 2002-03 continued.

But Jeffery’s 3-pointer began a 15-2 run that saw Colorado take the lead for the first time. Colorado led until Jamie Weisner’s 3-pointer with 9 seconds left tied it at 56. In overtime, Brittany Wilson’s 3 in the first minute put the Buffs ahead to stay. Ali Gibson scored 15 points and Weisner had 14 points and 13 boards for the Beavers.

Espindola, a veteran acquired in the offseason from Real Salt Lake, scored in the ninth and 24th minutes, while Jamison Olave, also obtained in the trade with RSL, added a goal in the 28th. Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri scored his first goal for the Timbers, who played before a sellout crowd of 20,674.
WILLOW, Alaska (AP) – The 41st running of Alaska’s Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is under way. By the time all the dogs were out of the chute Sunday, 65 teams were making their way through punishing wilderness toward the finish line in Nome on Alaska’s western coast 1,000 miles away.
