SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Rangers pitching prospect Martin Perez broke his left forearm when hit by a line drive and will not throw for about four weeks, and Texas gave up homers to Kendrys Morales and Jesus Montero in a 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners yesterday. The 21-year-old left-hander Perez was struck by a liner off Brad Miller’s bat. Perez dropped to the ground as the ball deflected off his arm, just above his wrist for an infield single. X-rays revealed he broke his left ulna. Perez will not likely be able to throw until early April. Morales homered in the first, a two-run shot. Montero connected in the seventh.

SEATTLE (AP) – Scott Suggs hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 4 minutes left and finished with 23 points, and Washington beat rival Washington State 72-68, handing the Cougars their ninth loss in a row. Suggs’ 3 from the top of the key snapped a 57-all tie. It was his fifth 3-pointer, tying his career high, and he added four more free throws as the Huskies took a 65-57 lead with 2:28 left. Brock Motum and Royce Woolridge scored 18 each for Washington State, but the Cougars’ worst slide since 2002-03 continued.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Chucky Jeffery had 25 points and No. 19 Colorado rallied to beat Oregon State 66-63 in overtime yesterday. The Buffaloes trailed by 10 with 11:46 to play. But Jeffery’s 3-pointer began a 15-2 run that saw Colorado take the lead for the first time. Colorado led until Jamie Weisner’s 3-pointer with 9 seconds left tied it at 56. In overtime, Brittany Wilson’s 3 in the first minute put the Buffs ahead to stay. Ali Gibson scored 15 points and Weisner had 14 points and 13 boards for the Beavers.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Taryn Wicijowski scored 18 points and Iwalani Rodrigues scored 17 to lead Utah to a 70-52 win over Oregon in the final Pac-12 regular-season game of the season for both teams. Wicijowski grabbed nine rebounds and Rodrigues added eight boards for the Utes. Michelle Plouffe had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, and Cheyenne Wilson scored 12 points for Utah. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Timbers overcame two early goals by Fabian Espindola to forge a 3-all draw with the New York Red Bulls in both teams’ Major League Soccer season opener last night. Espindola, a veteran acquired in the offseason from Real Salt Lake, scored in the ninth and 24th minutes, while Jamison Olave, also obtained in the trade with RSL, added a goal in the 28th. Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri scored his first goal for the Timbers, who played before a sellout crowd of 20,674.

WILLOW, Alaska (AP) – The 41st running of Alaska’s Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is under way. By the time all the dogs were out of the chute Sunday, 65 teams were making their way through punishing wilderness toward the finish line in Nome on Alaska’s western coast 1,000 miles away. The Iditarod kicked off Saturday with an 11-mile jaunt through Anchorage, 50 miles south of the real starting line in the town of Willow. Sunday’s event marked the competitive portion of the race.
