NEW YORK (AP) – A federal judge in New York has given a year in prison to the president of an investment research firm for an insider trading scheme. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan announced the sentence for Tai Nguyen (ty wehn) of Oregon City. The president of Insight Research LLC got inside information from a relative about a California biotechnology company, Abaxis Inc. He pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit securities fraud and wire fraud.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – A 30-year-old Sandy man has been sentenced to life in prison for murder by abuse and criminal mistreatment in the death of his 3-year-old daughter. The Oregonian reports Donald Lee Cockrell will not be eligible for parole for 33 years. His daughter, Alexis Pounder, was battered, malnourished and dehydrated when she died in January 2010. Cockrell’s fiancee Michelle Smith testified against him. She pleaded guilty last year to a murder charge in the case and faces a minimum of 30 years in prison.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The St. Paul Rodeo says there will be no wild horse race at this year’s Fourth of July rodeo. Publicist Ruth Nicolaus told the Statesman Journal the board voted to cancel the event this year, but it could be held in years to come. Last year two horses died from injuries in a head-on collision. In the event, wild horses run around the arena and participants compete to be the first to saddle and ride one. Other events such as bull riding and steer wrestling will continue.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – New estimates put the cost of a proposed police station in Medford at about $20 million. That’s about $8 million higher than earlier estimates. The Mail Tribune reports Police Chief Tim George told the council the current station located in City Hall is dysfunctional. He says criminals are escorted past employees and witnesses, and lack of space makes it difficult to interview informants.
