Ducks at the Dance

Oregon’s Arsalan Kazemi pulled down 17 rebounds and scored 11 points and 12th seeded Oregon de-horsed the Oklahoma State Cowboys yesterday 68 -55 to open the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  Damyean Dotson scored 17 points as the Ducks picked up their first tournament win in six years.  They’ll take on number four seed St Louis tomorrow at 4:10… Listen to the game on Coast Radio sports with the airtime set for 3:30.

Viking Ice Breaker

The Siuslaw Vikings opened the 2013 track and field campaign at home yesterday with the Siuslaw Ice Breaker.  Several outstanding performances were turned in by Viking athletes… Billy Jones cleared 13’ 1” in the pole vault and also won the long jump.  Ashlee Cole won the discus and the javelin… Katy Potter won the 15-hundred and the three-thousand.

Siuslaw took one-two-three finishes in two events… Mack Marbas led Mitchell Butler and Matt Campbell across the line in the 15-hundred.  Last year’s state champion in the 800, Hayden Schaffner led Campbell and Brian Schofield across the line to sweep the top three places in that race.

Other individual winners for Siuslaw… Mitchell Butler in the three-thousand; Alexandra Dodson in the ling jump and Mikaela Siegel in the triple jump.  Siuslaw took the two top spots in the boys 4-by-400 relay with the team of Campbell, Schaffner, Marbas and Seth Campbell coming out on top.

Prep Baseball

On the diamond… Three Viking pitchers combined for a no-hit seven run shutout win over the Cottage Grove Lions yesterday.  Jake Thompson started, going four innings and striking out seven.  John Dodson threw one inning in relief and Ryan Smith closed out the game.

On the Schedule

Prep baseball today, Siuslaw is in Coos Bay against Marshfield at four… the Lady Pirates will be in Florence at five for softball.  Viking Softball is back on the diamond tomorrow at South Eugene High School for a noon double header.  Mapleton Track and Field is at the Oakridge Relays tomorrow.

College Baseball

Number three Oregon State will host Arizona State for a three game Pac-12 baseball series beginning this afternoon in Corvallis… Oregon will host Arizona for three in Eugene.
