BEND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities shot and killed two cougars roaming a heavily populated neighborhood near Prineville. Crook County sheriff’s deputy Mitch Madden says that the animals were killed yesterday afternoon and that a wildlife biologist later determined that the cougars “were malnourished and possibly in the area searching for a food source.” When officers arrived, Madden says children were heard playing in the area.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – The FAA has decided that four air traffic control towers in Oregon are among 149 that will close by May 5 as part of the agency’s sequestration implementation plan. The towers are scheduled to close at airports in Pendleton, North Bend, McNary Field in Salem and Portland-Troutdale Airport in Portland. The East Oregonian reports pilots will be left to coordinate takeoffs and landings among themselves over a shared radio frequency with no help from ground controllers. All pilots are trained to fly using those procedures.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Small Business Administration says Oregon small businesses received a record number of taxpayer-guaranteed loans last year. The agency in 2012 guaranteed $428 million in loans in its Portland District, which includes all of Oregon plus part of southwest Washington. The Statesman Journal reports that the size of loans is also increasing under a 2010 change in loan limits. The previous limit was $2 million and that was increased to $5 million.
BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A pig found running loose in Beaverton has found a new home. Washington County Animal Services call his new home at a Scio animal sanctuary “hog heaven.” Last Thursday, a resident called police when the pig was spotted, and corralled the pig in a yard. On Saturday, The Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary announced he had been adopted there.
