EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The mother of a 24-year-old man who died in the Cottage Grove jail last year is suing the city, its police department and several officers. The lawsuit claims they’re at fault for the death May 5 of Nathan Scott Cooper. An autopsy concluded he died of aspiration pneumonia, which can occur when food or fluids are breathed into the lungs.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A Portland company is proposing mining of nickel in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest but the idea is drawing opposition from a conservation group. Red Flat Nickel Corp. wants to drill at two Curry County sites. One is near the southeastern tip of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area, the other is in the Red Flat area in the Hunter Creek drainage. Environmentalists say mining would threaten watersheds.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A World War II veteran waited nearly 70 years to receive a long-overdue award. Evon “Bud” Pennington received his Bronze Star on his 92nd birthday. Pennington was an Army infantryman who served in the Pacific campaign of World War II, helping take the island of Okinawa. The Bronze Star is recognized across every branch of the military and is one of the highest combat honors a soldier can receive.

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – State police say a crash on Interstate 84 just east of The Dalles killed a 47-year-old driver and injured his two passengers. Police say a car collided with a guardrail after trying to pass a commercial truck, and that the three people who died or were injured were not wearing seat belts.
