COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – A Coos Bay man who was teaching his 11-year-old daughter to drive when she ran into a parked car has been arrested on a drunken driving charge. The World reports 43-year-old Ronald Lee Walter could face additional charges in Saturday’s crash in a parking lot. No one was injured.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – The family of a 9-year-old girl who was shot to death in the yard of her Oregon City home says it was an accident. The family issued a statement through police yesterday saying Shayla May Shonneker was hit in the head by a bullet fired from inside the home by her mother’s boyfriend who was practicing drawing a handgun for a job as an armored car guard. KATU reports Joseph Wolters is an Iraq War veteran who hoped to become a police officer. Shayla was a fourth-grader at John Wetton Elementary School.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – An Eagle Point man has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for keeping three illegal ponds on property he controls. A Jackson County jury convicted 65-year-old Gary Harrington in July on charges that included interfering with the use of water. The Mail Tribune reports Harrington has been repeatedly convicted over an 11-year span for illegally storing water.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The father of a 12-year-old Klamath Falls girl who was burned in a freak fire at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital has hired a lawyer to sue the Portland hospital. Stephen Lane told The Oregonian his daughter Ireland Lane is likely to need expensive care, such as a machine to help her breathe at night and possibly cosmetic surgery in the future.
