You should have filled up Sunday…

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline took a huge jump this week in Florence.  Most of that jump came yesterday when the average spiked by 14-cents to $3.64 a gallon.

Marie Dodds with Triple-A says rising crude oil prices have put the pressure on.  Wholesale prices have risen by about ten dollars a barrel over the past three weeks, bringing the Oregon average up by nine-cents to $3.68 a gallon.  The national average price went up less than two cents to $3.53.

Dodds says only Hawaii has an average price of more than four-dollars and there are no states below the three-dollar mark.

Despite the huge jump Oregon prices are not in the top ten.  It’s 12th highest just behind Washington at $3.70.  Illinois is the highest average in the lower 48 states at $3.96.

Board Has Heavy Load Tonight

School board members at Siuslaw will cover a lot of territory this evening.

First they’ll get an update from Superintendent Jeff Davis about the local option tax levy currently before voters.  He’ll also talk about progress towards an “achievement compact” with the state and just how local schools are implementing Senate Bill 290.  That’s the measure approved by lawmakers two years ago that spells out how teachers and administrators will be evaluated.  Following the general session, a closed executive session is scheduled for the board to discuss labor negotiations.

The Siuslaw School Board meets at district offices on Oak Street at 6:30.

OCCO Wraps Up Season

The Florence Community Chorus will be joining the chamber orchestra in what conductors are calling a “fun, delightful program of familiar tunes”.

Tickets are free and can be picked up in advance at Mari’s Books in Yachats for Friday’s performance.  Tickets are at several locations in Florence, including the FEC, for the Sunday afternoon show.

Ticket holders get guaranteed seating as long as they arrive five minutes before each performance.

Inaugural Oregon Dunes Triathlon

The inaugural U.S. Bank Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon will be Saturday morning in and around Woahink Lake.

Traffic on and around the East Woahink Day Use Area; Canary Road and Clear Lake is expected to be congested during the races.

Dunes City is the major organizer and they’re seeking a few more volunteers to help marshal the bicycle and running courses.  Renee Green says the races begin at eight, the first finishers are expected to cross the line shortly after nine for the sprint duathlon.  The Olympic triathlon finishers will come in around noon.

Volunteers should be prepared to meet at 5:30 that morning for the initial briefing.

She can be contacted at Dunes City Hall.

Coast Radio, along with several broadcast partners, will be covering the finish line between nine and one Saturday…
