Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A Beaverton police officer has pleaded not guilty in Vancouver to a child rape charge. The Oregonian reports the trial for 33-year-old Christopher Warren is scheduled for Aug. 19 in Clark County. Warren lives in Vancouver and has been on paid leave since April when he pleaded not guilty in Washington County to separate charges of food stamp fraud.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Multnomah County medical examiner says an inmate found dead in February in the county detention center died of a heroin overdose. David Chilton had been in jail about eight months. The 55-year-old was accused of robbing a Portland bank, carjacking a car and pulling a gun on a Portland State University security guard. Lt. Steve Alexander says drugs are smuggled into the jail, even though inmates are strip-searched when they are booked.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon Supreme Court ruling appears to pave the way for mortgage lenders to resume foreclosures outside the court system. Nonjudicial foreclosures have all but stopped over the past year amid uncertainty from an appeals court decision. The high court ruled yesterday that creditors using an electronic mortgage registry don’t have to publicly record the ownership history of a trust deed.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – A dam on the North Umpqua River near Roseburg has been modified to make the spawning migration easier for lamprey – a jawless fish that is often mistaken for an eel. State wildlife officials say they have put a lamprey ramp on the Winchester Dam. The numbers of lamprey crossing the dam have fallen from 30,000 in the 1960s to just 200 in recent years. Like salmon, lamprey spend part of their life in the ocean and return to their native rivers to spawn.
