PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon adopted a goal two years ago of sending 80 percent of high school graduates to college. Data from the National Student Clearinghouse show that just 61 percent of the class of 2011 enrolled in a college or community college. Nationally, 68 percent of high school graduates enroll in college. The Oregonian reports only one of Oregon’s 180 school districts reached the 80 percent goal. The Riverdale School District in Portland sent 86 percent of its 2011 grads to college.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Student fees at the University of Oregon will reach a record $560 a term over the new two years. The Register-Guard reports the fees will pay for remodeling the Student Recreation Center and Erb Memorial Union as well as health services, student clubs, bus passes and other services.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland State University public safety office has issued a warning to students about an attack. A man followed a female student off a MAX train Saturday afternoon into Neuberger Hall and attacked her in an elevator. KATU reports the student fought back and was not injured. The man fled. He’s described as a white man, about 6-foot-1, with a shiny bald head.

TUALATIN, Ore. (AP) – Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue says a man burning weeds with a propane torch accidentally set his home on fire. The torch touched off a pine tree next to the house yesterday and flames spread up the side of the house and into the attic. All the residents and their dog got out. The man had recognized the fire danger and wet down the tree, but it caught fire anyway.
