SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate delayed a vote on a $6.6 billion funding package for schools when it was clear it wouldn’t pass. The move yesterday is the latest wrinkle in a budget impasse that shows no signs of breaking. There are only three weeks left before a deadline to approve a new two-year spending plan.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon drivers caught smoking in cars with kids may face hefty fines under a new state law. Gov. John Kitzhaber signed into law yesterday a bill that prohibits drivers from lighting up cigarettes or marijuana if a person under 18 is also in the vehicle. According to the legislation, the maximum fine for the first offense would be $250.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Lightning strikes have touched off wildfires in Eastern Oregon, including one that grew in brisk winds yesterday to about 8,500 acres. A nearby fire that was thought to have been contained jumped fire lines yesterday afternoon. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management says the fires are burning in typical terrain of grass and sagebrush.

VENETA, Ore. (AP) – Lane County sheriff’s officers have determined that a man in the small Oregon community of Veneta man kept his wife in the dark about their imminent eviction, then shot and killed her last week before taking his own life. The Register-Guard reports that Bradley Chauran called 911 on June 5 after shooting his wife. Sheriff’s Sgt. Cliff Harrold says officers were supposed to evict them June 6.
