COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Divers recovered the body last night of an 8-year-old boy who went underwater while swimming at Upper Empire Lakes in John Topits Park in Coos Bay. KVAL reports Karistian Croy of Coos Bay disappeared yesterday afternoon while swimming with family members.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – A swimmer who was rescued from the Clackamas River at Oregon City later died at a hospital. Clackamas County deputies say a construction worker reported seeing the man go under the water yesterday near the High Rocks area as he swam toward his dog. Police and sheriff’s divers recovered the man who was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead. He is identified as 61-year-old Jack William Davies of Sherwood. The sheriff’s office says the dog made it out of the river and is fine.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Marion County district attorney’s office says a grand jury has cleared a sheriff’s deputy in the April 23 shooting that wounded a burglary suspect at Salem. The grand jury decided yesterday that the use of force was justified. Deputy Cliff Self shot 38-year-old Dusty Epps in a confrontation after stopping a vehicle Epps was riding in. Epps was wanted on a parole violation. Epps recovered and is facing charges. The driver also is facing burglary and theft charges.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police say they have arrested the driver whose pickup struck and killed a Seattle man trying to dribble a soccer ball 10,000 miles from Seattle to Brazil for the World Cup. Scott Van Hiatt of Neskowin was arrested yesterday on a charge of criminally negligent homicide. Richard Swanson was hit from behind month along U.S. 101 near Lincoln City.
