SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers are taking up a handful of remaining bills today before adjournment. Last night, a budget committee took up a major bonding package unveiled only hours earlier. The package would boost funding for construction projects across the state, including $80 million to build a state psychiatric hospital in Junction City, Ore.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate has rejected a bill that would use driving records to automatically register people to vote. The bill failed in a 15-15 vote yesterday following passionate testimony from lawmakers on both sides of the issue. Republican Sen. Jackie Winters said automating the voter registration system trivializes the act of voting.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – Divers with the Clackamas County sheriff’s office and Gladstone Fire Department recovered the body yesterday of a Canby woman who disappeared while swimming in the Clackamas River. Family members reported that 26-year-old Meagan O’Meara-Clark jumped into the water while rafting Friday near Carver Park. She was not wearing a life jacket.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Community organizations in Portland are encouraging people to complete their GED exams before they get more difficult. The Oregonian reports that the high school equivalency exam will change in January 2014, in line with the Common Core Standards. People who haven’t completed the test by the end of December will have to start over.
