BALTIMORE (AP) – Seldom-used Henry Blanco hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning off Wei-Yin Chen, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 yesterday behind left-hander Joe Saunders. Batting ninth in the lineup, the 41-year-old Blanco sent an 0-2 pitch into the left-field seats to erase a 2-1 deficit. The backup catcher was playing in his 32nd game of the season, the 17th with Seattle after being signed as a free agent.
BALTIMORE (AP) – Seattle Mariners reliever Stephen Pryor has been shut down for the season with a triceps injury. Pryor went on the disabled list April 15 with a torn right lat muscle. The triceps injury occurred during the right-hander’s rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Tacoma. General manager Jack Zduriencik (zur-EHN’-sihk) said yesterday that Pryor “worked really hard, but … he won’t pitch the rest of the year.”
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Lindsay Whalen scored 22 points, Seimone Augustus added 18 and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Seattle Storm 90-72 last night for their 18th straight home win. Rebekkah Brunson had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Maya Moore scored 16 points as Minnesota extended its overall winning streak to nine games.
KENT, Wash. (AP) – Matt Hagan raced to his fourth victory of the year to extend his Funny Car points lead, beating Bob Tasca III yesterday in the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways. Hagan, the 2011 Funny Car champion, powered his Dodge Charger to a 4.171-second run at 294.75 mph. Tasca, seeking his first win in nearly a year, slowed to a 5.324 at 164.81 in his Ford Shelby Mustang.
