ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – A Coast Guard helicopter has transported two burned crew members from a cargo ship about 15 miles southwest of the mouth of the Columbia River. The agency says the operator of the bulk cargo vessel Alexandros Theo called for help yesterday morning. The Coast Guard sent a helicopter crew from Astoria, Ore., and a response boat from Ilwaco, Wash. The men were hoisted aboard the helicopter and flown to medics at the Coast Guard’s Astoria air station.

TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Coast Guard says a 50-foot fishing trawler started taking on water yesterday about 65 miles west of Tillamook, but later headed back to port under its own power. A rescue swimmer was lowered from a Coast Guard helicopter to help the owner get the water pumped from the wooden vessel. The Coast Guard says a husband and wife and their two dogs were aboard, but she and the dogs got into another boat after water starting coming in the fish hold. The husband remained aboard and headed the vessel toward Astoria.

BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) – Baker City officials say tests haven’t pinpointed the source of a parasite that has made dozens of people sick the past 10 days. City Manager Mike Kee tells the Baker City Herald tests confirmed cryptosporidium, but not in numbers large enough to cause widespread diarrhea and other symptoms that have plagued residents. The city has asked residents to conserve water and recommends people boil water for drinking and washing dishes.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber has appointed a southwest Washington economic development official to lead the Oregon Employment Department. Kitzhaber’s office said yesterday the governor is asking the Senate to confirm Lisa Nisenfeld next month. She would lead the agency that distributes unemployment checks and works to connect job seekers with employers.
