PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber says Sept. 30 will be the date for a special session of the Legislature if he can round up enough votes for a combination of pension cuts, tax increase and small-business tax cuts. Kitzhaber said yesterday that “it’s time to call the question.” He’s been trying for months to reach a deal that would raise new tax revenue to boost funding for schools and mental health treatment while lowering costs of public-employee pensions. Kitzhaber says “a solution is within reach.”
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A police chief, state prosecutors and a dispensary owner are among the 13 people appointed by the Oregon Health Authority to advise the state on its new marijuana dispensaries. The dispensary law goes into effect on March 1. Before then, a bill passed this year dictates that the state must draw up rules, including ways to test marijuana for mold and pesticides. Among those appointed are Lincoln County District Attorney Rob Bovett and Yamhill County Sheriff Jack Crabtree.
SISTERS, Ore. (AP) – A man who died after Oregon state troopers opened fire during a traffic stop near Sisters has been identified as a 34-year-old Texas resident. Deschutes County District Attorney Patrick Flaherty yesterday identified the man who died last Friday as William Edward Hall III, whose residence is listed in public records as Arlington, Texas.
TIGARD, Ore. (AP) – The owner of a 5-foot-long python reported missing in the Portland suburb of Tigard (TY-gard) says the snake has been found. Police spokesman Jim Wolf says the snake’s female owner found it yesterday, coiled in her garage near a hot water tank. The snake appears to be fine. The Oregonian reports that the snake is believed to have escaped from its container yesterday morning.
