CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon authorities are reminding the public to call them before moving old explosives after a man dropped off blasting caps at a fire station in Philomath. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that the Oregon State Police Explosives Unit secured the box of blasting caps last week. Oregon State Police’s Sgt. Kevin Delgrande says old dynamite or blasting caps can be dangerous if they’re no longer in their respective manufactured condition.

VIDA, Ore. (AP) – The federal Bureau of Land Management is considering conducting logging on parts of up to about 2,060 acres of forestland in the McKenzie River basin, in the vicinity of Vida. The Eugene Register-Guard reported yesterday the agency is seeking public comment on the preliminary proposal at a meeting on Sept. 26. Agency spokeswoman Kristine Struck says it hasn’t been decided how much timber the bureau is seeking to log.

YREKA, Calif. (AP) – Since the 1850s Gold Rush, some folks in the rugged hills and valleys along the Oregon-California border have felt they would be better off if they could break away and form their own state. That old secessionist feeling is rising again, triggered by a belief that those in the urban halls of power in both states ignore the needs and desires of those in the rural areas. This month, the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors in California voted in favor of a resolution to make a new State of Jefferson.

CANBY, Ore. (AP) – Wild turkeys are living in Canby in the northern Willamette Valley, where they’ve got admirers and some detractors. It started with five plump birds last summer. One’s been hit by a car and killed, but a baby turkey has been produced. And residents think a second flock is in town. One avid turkey watcher has created a Facebook page: Canby Town Turkeys.
