PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland General Electric had crews working overnight to repair downed lines and restore service to customers who lost service in weekend rain and wind storms. The utility said more than 90,000 customers lost power since the storm began. By 5:30 a.m. today service had been restored to all but about 8,000 customers, mostly in the Gresham, Damascus and Canby areas. Outages also occurred in north Portland, Cornelius and Silverton.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The suicide rate in Portland is three times the national rate, according to a report the Portland Police Bureau is releasing today. KATU reports the rate is about 34 people per 100,000 population. There were 202 suicides in Portland from April 2011 through June 2013 or about one every four days. Police are holding a news conference with health professionals to let people know there are options available for people thinking about taking their own lives.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An autopsy is scheduled today in the shooting death of a 57-year-old Salem man. Police said little about the case over the weekend except that residents of the house where Daniel Melton lived are cooperating with an investigation of Saturday afternoon’s shooting, and there are no suspects unaccounted for.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision holds another hearing today to consider releasing Sidney Porter, who has served 21 years in prison since killing a John Day police officer. The board decided at a February hearing to release Porter, but Gov. John Kitzhaber asked board members to hold a new hearing to give police more input in the decision. Porter fractured Officer Frank Ward’s skull with a stick of firewood.
