Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – The common perception of the spread offense is that teams want to pass all the time out of the formation. Not everyone. Some of the best teams running the spread actually run the ball more than they pass. Oregon has been the catalyst for the run-first spread, ranking among the nation’s leaders in total offense nearly every season. Some of the best running backs in the country come from spread offenses, too, including Washington’s Bishop Sankey.

UNDATED (AP) Brandin Cooks is the nation’s leading receiver that no one seems to know about outside the Pac-12 – although that’s quickly changing. The Oregon State junior ranks ahead of all FBS-level receivers with nearly 11 catches and 168 yards receiving per game. He ranks second in scoring with 12 points a game, and fifth for all-purpose yards with an average of 184 a game. He is considered a front-runner for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver, and he’s even getting some Heisman whispers.

WHITEFISH, Mont. (AP) – The NAIA has ruled that Rocky Mountain College must forfeit its Aug. 31 win over Southern Oregon after the school reported it had used an ineligible player. Frontier Conference Commissioner Kent Paulson commended the Billings school for reporting the scheduling issue that resulted in a player not being enrolled in the minimum number of credits required by the NAIA to be considered a full-time student.
