GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Federal budget cuts won’t hit next month’s federal subsidy checks to timber counties in Oregon. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon says the White House Office of Management and Budget has reversed an earlier decision to cut the payments due to sequestration. Oregon timber counties are to share $100 million.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Onion growers in the Northwest are pleased that federal regulators have announced they’ll rework proposed water quality rules. Onion growers have protested against the rules, especially one calling for weekly testing of irrigation water. They say few farmers using ditch irrigation would meet the standards, and the standards wouldn’t add much to food safety.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A pedestrian hit by a light-rail train in Southeast Portland on Sunday has died. The Oregonian reports crews had to lift the train off 48-year-old Phu Van Nguyen to free him. Authorities said they believe he walked or ran in front of a southbound train as it was approaching a station. An investigation is underway.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – When a dog named Rocky fell off a cliff in the Oneonta Gorge Saturday, his owners thought he was dead. KGW reports Rocky’s owners searched on Saturday and Sunday. They didn’t hear Rocky barking and feared the worst. But a group of hikers heard barking near the base of the falls and Mountain Rescue was able to retrieve the dog as a training exercise. Soon after Rocky was reunited with his owners.
