EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A change in state law that took effect yesterday has prompted Lane County to end a program that has helped businesses recover their financial losses from people who deliberately write bad checks. District Attorney Alex Gardner tells The Register-Guard the legislative change makes the check enforcement program potentially too expensive to operate.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Snowpack levels across much of Oregon are below normal levels, following a year that also was the driest on record in Eugene-Springfield. A National Weather Service meteorologist says the entire West Coast is dry. He tells The Register-Guard that could create concerns for water supplies, plants and an early fire season.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Evergreen International Airlines has filed a Chapter 7 petition in federal bankruptcy court in Delaware. This comes less than two weeks after unsecured creditors sought to force the airline into involuntary bankruptcy. The Oregonian reports the filing, made Tuesday, estimates total assets of the Evergreen companies at up to $100 million and total debts up to $500 million. Evergreen says it has up to 5,000 creditors.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man suspected of assaulting a TriMet bus driver in a fare dispute has been released from jail. KGW-TV reports Daemon Bowman was released by a judge during a court appearance Tuesday on the condition of “close street supervision.” That means he will be monitored around the clock until his trial, which is scheduled for Feb. 5. TriMet and a bus drivers’ union expressed concerns with Bowman’s release.
