PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Strong investment returns and last year’s cuts to public-employee retirement benefits have helped cut the Oregon pension system’s unfunded liability in half. Public Employees Retirement System director Paul Cleary spoke yesterday to a citizen panel that oversees pension fund investments. Cleary says the unfunded liability dropped from $16.3 billion at the end of 2011 to $8.1 billion at the end of last year.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The Eugene City Council has given a month-long reprieve to the residents of an unauthorized homeless camp known as “Whoville.” The Register-Guard reports yesterday’s vote was 6-2 in favor of letting the 40-person camp remain until the city manager comes up with a place for the people to go.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Police in the southern Oregon city of Medford say they have arrested a 41-year-old Gold Hill, Ore., woman accused of stealing more than $140,000 from the business where she worked as a bookkeeper. Police said Loretta Lynn Floyd was arrested yesterday for investigation of aggravated theft and aggravated identity theft. It was not known late yesterday whether Floyd was represented by a lawyer.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Multnomah County, Ore., search and rescue team has found a female hiker who had called 911 to say she was lost in an area called Angel’s Rest in the Columbia River Gorge. Lt. Steve Alexander says 56-year-old Pamela Benjamin-Monheimer of Portland was located shortly before 8 last night. She was cold but unhurt.
