PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The governing body of Oregon’s largest public employee union has rejected a merger its leadership proposed with another local. The Oregonian reports the General Council of Local 503 of the Service Employees International Union voted against the merger 118-75. Opponents of the merger with Local 49 said it would rewrite the bylaws to shift more power to the international union’s headquarters.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 19-year-old Oregon woman who drove an SUV into a leaf pile, accidentally killing two young girls playing in it, has been taken into federal custody on an immigration hold and may face deportation. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that Cinthya Garcia-Cisneros is being placed in removal proceedings. Garcia-Cisneros has been living legally in the U.S. under a program for immigrants brought here as children.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Marine who stepped on a hidden explosive device while helping a wounded comrade in Afghanistan is coming home. The East Oregonian reports that Lance Cpl. Casey Allison lost his right leg below the knee and both the pinky and ring finger on his left hand. He is a 2010 Hermiston (Ore.) High School graduate.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Crews have started building Oregon’s World War II memorial on the grounds of the state Capitol in Salem. The memorial will include a five-sided pillar that resembles an obelisk and reaches 33 feet tall. A wall will list the names of Oregonians killed in the war. Construction is expected to wrap up in June.
