PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – With a Feb. 20 strike deadline looming, both Portland Public Schools and its teachers are taking steps to prepare. The Oregonian reports that the two sides met yesterday afternoon with a state mediator. Unresolved contract issues include class size, salary increases and early retirement incentives.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge in Portland has ruled the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency must get a warrant before accessing Oregon’s pharmaceutical monitoring database. Judge Ancer Haggerty said in a 16-page opinion it is more than reasonable for patients to believe that law enforcement agencies won’t have unfettered access to their prescription records. The American Civil Liberties Union attorney called the ruling a victory for privacy.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A police spokesman in the Portland suburb of Beaverton says an officer who was confronted by an armed man during a domestic disturbance call shot and wounded the man. Officer Mike Rowe said the wounded 28-year-old man was taken to a hospital with what were described as serious but apparently non-life-threatening injuries. The man was not immediately identified. Additional details were not immediately available.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Officials in eastern Oregon say an avalanche in the Wallowa Mountains has killed two backcountry skiers and seriously injured two others. The Baker County sheriff’s office says the avalanche hit at about noon yesterday as a group of eight was skiing in the remote and mountainous area. Most of the skiers are from the Seattle area.
