EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon won’t renew the contract of women’s basketball coach Paul Westhead when it expires at the end of the month. The school made the announcement yesterday. Westhead signed a five-year contract in 2009 and it runs out on March 31. He told his players before practice yesterday.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Felix Hernandez gave up two hits and struck out one over two scoreless innings in his first spring-training start as the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 yesterday. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner allowed a double off the left-center field wall by Yasiel Puig on his first pitch of the game and walked Carl Crawford.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Four-time champion Martin Buser is holding on to his lead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The Big Lake musher was the first to reach the checkpoint at Nikolai, clocking in at 1:09 a.m. yesterday, followed more than four hours later by Nicolas Petit of Girdwood. Nikolai is more than 700 miles from Nome, the finish line of Alaska’s nearly 1,000-mile race.
