PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Health & Science University says it has raised $286 million in its effort to meet a challenge from Phil Knight. The Legislature last week approved $200 million to help meet the goal.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a man was fatally shot during a confrontation with officers near Wilson High School in southwest Portland and an officer was wounded. Sgt. Pete Simpson says the officer’s injury is not life-threatening. The Oregonian reports an officer bleeding from an upper-arm wound was taken to a hospital late yesterday afternoon. Simpson confirms police recovered a gun near the body.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge has sentenced a Mexican man to 12 years in prison for his role in the distribution of heroin that killed a Milwaukie, Ore., man. Prosecutors said that 24-year-old Charly Aguayo-Caro managed day-to-day operations for a distribution business in Portland. Police arrested him after the 2012 overdose death of 23-year-old Michael Rael.

DEPOE BAY, Ore. (AP) – Oregon parks officials say it’s nearly prime viewing season for the annual gray whale spring migration, visible from the Oregon coast. Parks officials say northbound whale numbers usually peak about the last week of March. They say nearly 160 gray whales pass along the coast each day during the migration’s peak and onshore whale watchers may see them spouting.
