VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – John Gibson made 18 saves to record a shutout in his NHL debut and the Anaheim Ducks eliminated the Vancouver Canucks from playoff contention with a 3-0 victory last night. Daniel Winnik, Kyle Palmieri and Matt Beleskey scored for Anaheim.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners’ $240 million investment, Robinson Cano, and a handful of other new faces will finally make their home debut after a promising opening week on the road. Cano and the Mariners come home last night to face the Los Angeles Angels. Seattle returns after a 4-2 road trip against the Angels and Oakland that looked daunting before the season began and instead became a glimmer of optimism for the club.

DENVER (AP) – Jordan Lyles gave up one run over 6 2-3 innings in his Coors Field debut for the Rockies, added a career-best three hits and drove in two runs in Colorado’s 8-1 win over the Chicago White Sox last night. Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki homered for the Rockies, who beat the White Sox for the second time in six tries in Denver.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Brett Rypien, a Spokane, Wash., quarterback and nephew of Super Bowl champion quarterback Mark Rypien, has made a verbal commitment to play football at Boise State. Brett Rypien visited Boise State over the weekend and committed to joining the Broncos for the 2015 season. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior has thrown for just over 8,500 yards and 90 touchdowns in three seasons at Shadle Park High.
