PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Incumbent Oregon Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley will face Republican Monica Wehby in November. The Portland physician defeated state Rep. Jason Conger in yesterday’s primary. Republicans hope she can make the seat competitive and boost their effort to retake the Senate majority.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Voters in Jackson County have voted to ban genetically engineered crops. With most of the ballots counted, voters in the southern Oregon county were passing the measure by a 2-to-1 margin. A pair of competing campaigns raised $1.3 million to sway Jackson County’s 120,000 registered voters. A similar measure enjoyed a strong lead in neighboring Josephine County.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Convicted killer David Taylor was formally sentenced to death yesterday in Eugene for killing a man in 2012 to take his car for a bank robbery. The 58-year-old Eugene man becomes the 35th person on Oregon’s death row at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Following the dismissal of three basketball players in the wake of a police investigation into an alleged rape, Oregon has formed a panel to review prevention and response practices in sexual misconduct cases. The Lane County district attorney’s office determined there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute the players on criminal charges.
