STAYTON, Ore. (AP) – A bicycle rider who ran over a piece of two-by-four lumber and crashed on a highway shoulder near Stayton has died. State Police say 55-year-old Leon Wade Hyatt of Stayton was not wearing a helmet. He landed on his face Saturday afternoon and was taken to a Portland hospital where he died.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a motorcycle was apparently traveling at a very high rate of speed when it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a vehicle early yesterday in Portland, killing the rider. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say an intruder broke into a Portland apartment early this morning and tried to sexually assault a woman. Her fiance chased him away. Police searched the neighborhood with a dog and located a suspect, a teenage boy, at a nearby apartment complex.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Scott Schultz threw a two-hit shutout as No. 1 national seed Oregon State defeated UC Irvine 4-0 last night to set up a deciding game at the NCAA Corvallis regional today. Schultz continued a string of dominant pitching for the Beavers’ starters, who have surrendered just two runs and 10 hits with 28 strikeouts in their three tournament victories. Schultz finished with four strikeouts.
