Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) – The Seattle Mariners host the Oakland Athletics tonight at Safeco Field. Left handed pitcher James Paxton opens against the A’s Jason Hammel. The Mariners are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Houston Astros. The Mariners are a half-game behind Detroit for the second AL Wild Card.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Jake Peavy struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter to win his third start in a row and the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2 yesterday for their ninth straight home victory. San Francisco, which leads the NL wild-card standings, pulled within two games of the idle Dodgers a day before a key weekend series against the NL West leaders at AT&T Park.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Ifo Ekpre-Olomu’s acrobatic interception against Michigan State perfectly illustrated his reason for staying at Oregon. The senior cornerback has more to prove with the Ducks. Oregon defeated the then-No. 7 Spartans 46-27 last Saturday, pushing the Ducks up a spot in the AP Top 25 to No 2. Oregon hosts Wyoming tomorrow before opening up the conference season at Washington State next weekend.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Frank Reich hopes first impressions are overrated. Reich’s debut as the San Diego Chargers’ offensive coordinator on Monday night wasn’t a success. The Chargers managed just 17 in losing by one to the Arizona Cardinals. The Chargers face off against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
