Problem with your ballot? Get it fixed before it’s too late

If you already turned in your ballot but realized too late that you forgot to sign it… there is still a chance your vote could be counted. If you are registered to vote, but did not get a ballot at all, Lane County Elections can still help you “make your mark”.

Lane County Clerk Cheryl Betschart says her office will send a postcard with instructions on what to do for voters who have failed to sign their secrecy envelope.

Other issues, like not receiving a ballot, can be resolved but only if the voter contacts her office.

If you still have not received a ballot but believe you should have, call the Elections Office immediately. You’ll have to do it today or tomorrow morning… as all ballots must be returned no later than 8 PM tomorrow… and post marks don’t count.

So far, about 40-percent of Lane County voters have returned their ballots.

Scammers employ laughable measures

Here’s yet another… although somewhat laughable… attempt by scammers trying to get your personal information. First of all, you may receive a “robo-call” from someone purporting to be from the IRS telling you to get your information together and call them back at the number provided. When you call, this is what you get:

“Thank you for calling IRS, how can I help you.”

That’s right.  A very thick accent saying “Thank you for calling IRS, how can I help you.” The person on the other end of the line… purportedly from the Washington D.C. area… can become rather abusive if you question whether or not he really is with the Internal Revenue Service, proclaiming:

“You will come to know within 35 minutes while the sheriff will be at your home to arrest you.”

Authorities say the best thing to do is to simply hang up and don’t give them any information.

Resort sues window manufacturer

A half-million dollar lawsuit filed in Lane County Circuit Court this week makes a claim that a Washington window manufacturer failed to live up to a warranty on their products.

Driftwood Shores Resort and Conference Center had windows installed by Milgard Manufacturing following major storm damage to the hotel two years ago.

The new windows and sliding glass doors leaked and “were not properly rated for weather exposure”; nor did they meet building codes according to the suit filed by the Association of Unit Owners at Driftwood Shores.

Milgard Manufacturing did not respond to a request by the Register Guard for comment on the suit.

FACC talks vets

A four-speaker panel focusing on veterans in general and homeless veterans in particular will speak Wednesday morning during a monthly presentation by the Florence Area Community Coalition.

Two representatives from the Veteran’s Administration… Social Worker Mitch Trotter and Father Jonathan Landon… the VA Roseburg chaplain will be half of the panel at the Bromley Room at Siuslaw Public Library. That starts at nine AM.

Also scheduled to speak is Mathew Rosenbaum, a social worker with the Housing and Urban Development Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing System. Dan Rupe, another social worker, will join the panel as well.

The Florence Area Community Council is a consortium of non-profit and non-governmental agencies with a goal to improve the quality of life in Western Lane County.
