PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Fire and Rescue says firefighters have doused a blaze that damaged four units at a northeast-side motel last night. EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A third University of Oregon student has been diagnosed with a contagious bacterial infection. The Register-Guard reports that health officials say the male student is in the intensive care unit of a local hospital. The university said it sent text messages and emails to students and faculty telling them that an antibiotic that prevents the spread of the bacteria in the body is available at the campus health center.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The Eugene City Council says while Uber may be a new type of ride service, it should comply with the same rules as traditional taxi companies. Members last night approved a code change that makes it explicit that ride-sharing services such as Uber must be licensed by the city. Uber said the code change would jeopardize its operations in Eugene.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state House has approved a measure changing the way Oregon handles class-action lawsuits. Two Republicans joined all Democrats present in approving the measure yesterday. Democrats have put the measure on a fast track over objections from critics who say it will upend Oregon’s legal procedures for handling class-action lawsuits.
