Workers who don’t have access to a retirement account from their employer would be automatically enrolled unless they opt out. Critics include business interests concerned about higher costs.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill that could alter or eliminate fifth-year programs designed to help high school students be successful in college. The Albany Democrat-Herald newspaper reports the program allows students in certain districts to defer getting a high school diploma. Instead, they take additional courses at a community college in their so-called fifth year of high school. The bill’s sponsor says there’s a problem using money meant for the K-12 school system for higher education.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say a 21-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in the accidental shooting of a friend. The victim was identified as 23-year-old Beketel Sleeper of northeast Portland.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – The Deschutes County sheriff’s office says a 40-year-old Bend resident reports he was shot and wounded by an intruder he found in his house yesterday afternoon.
