Volcanoes win opening game of series

The Salem-Keizer volcanoes turned a potential error into a game-ending double play last night in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 3-2 win over the Emeralds in Eugene.

The Ems appeared to be on the verge of tying the game with one out and a runner on first when Blake Headley hit a sharp line-drive. It bounced off the glove of Jose Vizcaino Jr. at third and a quick thinking C.J. Hinojosa, the shortstop, snatched the loose ball and threw to second to force out the lead runner. Richard Amion completed the double-play. The second baseman threw the ball to first, putting Headley out and ending the game.

Games two and three of the three-game series are tonight and tomorrow at PK Park… the Ems head to Boise Sunday then will be back at home in Eugene against Everett on Wednesday.
