City Council to consider engineering and environmental contract

Improvements above and below the surface along Rhododendron Drive between Highway 101 and Ninth Street are likely to begin later this year. Preparations for that begin Monday night when the Florence City Council will consider a $223-thousand contract with Civil West Engineering Services.

In a report to the council, Florence Public Works Director Mike Miller says Civil West will prepare civil and environmental contracts; design and oversee the construction.

It includes installing larger water lines along Rhododendron Drive to improve service as well as resurface the street. Miller says existing curbs, gutters and sidewalks will be retained as much as possible, but Civil West will oversee the replacement of those that are appropriate.

The City Council meets at City Hall at six.

Planning Commission to consider another housing proposal

The Florence Planning Commission will consider their second housing development this month when they meet Tuesday.

The Commission gave preliminary approval last week to a 40-lot subdivision just west of Sandpines Golf Links.

The proposal under consideration next week is for 54 single family homes immediately east of Sandpines.

Approval was granted to construct 99 town homes on the site in 2006. The current owners, S&C Investments, want to reduce the density and build free-standing homes.

A public hearing on the proposal is set for seven pm, Tuesday at City Hall.

POW/MIA recognition today

The Oregon Legislature approved a measure earlier this year requiring state offices and other public buildings Oregon to fly the black and white National League of Families POW/MIA flag. That takes effect January 1st.

That banner is flying over public buildings across the state and the country today in observance of National Prisoner of War and Missing in Action Day.

It commemorates the sacrifices made by service members and their families in the defense of our nation.

The day will be recognized in two events today in Florence. At 11, the VFW will be at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Old Town; the Oregon Coast Military Museum will observe the occasion at noon.

Winchester Bay man facing rape and kidnapping charges

A 41-year old Winchester Bay man was arrested and charged this week with rape, kidnapping and assault.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office said they responded to a call at Beach Boulevard in Winchester Bay, two AM Wednesday. A 38-year old Charleston woman reported she had met the man at a bar Tuesday night. He invited her to his trailer and she went with him. She told police he then forcibly raped her. She was able to escape and call police.

Detectives arrested Jason Taylor.
