Wednesday night gathering aimed at building businesses

If you’ve been thinking you might like to swim with the sharks, then you could have your chance Wednesday evening in Florence.

The City of Florence, along with RAIN, the Regional Accelerator and Innovation network, is teaming up with a couple of other local partners to host a “call of interest” at City Lights Cinemas.

One goal is to connect local entrepreneurs with potential investors.

But the overall aim is to encourage the growth of those businesses and ultimately the local economy.

RAIN offers some serious services to businesses looking to grow says Florence City Manager Erin Reynolds. Their primary focus is on businesses that generate a majority of their revenue from sales outside the community.

Wednesday’s event will feature five businesses from the Eugene Springfield area making pitches similar to those seen on the TV show Shark Tank. That’ll be a demonstration to local entities. Space is limited so Reynolds says pre-registration is requested. You can do that by going to the city’s website or calling City Hall for information.

Odor keeps clinic closed

The Family Medicine Clinic at PeaceHealth will remain closed again today as officials try to determine the cause of a strange odor.

Workers noticed the smell Wednesday afternoon. They cancelled appointments and kept the clinic closed Thursday and Friday. Firefighters performed air quality testing Thursday, but found no toxins; nor were they able to pinpoint the cause.

PeaceHealth is hoping to reopen the clinic tomorrow.

CROW to host haunted maze

A group that focuses on teaching kids about performing arts will provide a chance for their students to show off some of their lessons this week. The Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshop… also known as CROW… will host a haunted maze Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The CROW headquarters, at 3120 Highway 101, has been converted into a spooky labyrinth of horrors. The maze will be open Thursday and Friday from six to nine, then again Halloween day from three to six. It’s $4 per entry, or you can buy a $14 “unlimited nightly entry” hand stamp.

All proceeds will support the renovation of the building to turn it into a permanent artistic facility for youth.

Florence Public Arts Committee

An update on the Dancing with Sea Lions project, as well as efforts to revitalized downtown Florence will be delivered this morning at ten when the Florence Public Arts Committee meets.

The most time during the meeting this morning will be devoted to talking about the establishment of a formal Art Plan, along with accompanying policies that would be adopted by the City Council. Committee members have spent time looking at the efforts of four other communities… Redmond and Lake Oswego in Oregon, along with Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and San Jose, California.

The group meets this morning, ten AM at City Hall.
