SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Judicial misconduct hearings are slated to begin next week in the case against a Marion County judge who refused to perform same-sex weddings and has been accused of other ethics violations. The Statesman Journal reports Judge Vance Day will be heard by a state commission that can recommend sanctions. Day denies he broke ethics rules and says he’s being targeted because of his religious beliefs.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The death of a fugitive involved in a 17-mile chase that ended in a shootout with police along Highway 26 last week has been ruled a suicide. The Oregonian reports the state medical examiner’s office said yesterday that Andrew DeHart died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. Initial reports indicated that he had been killed by police gunfire.

NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) – Newberg’s police chief has been cleared of wrongdoing following an investigation into allegations of police misconduct. The Oregonian reports the allegations included the use of excessive force and improper editing of police reports. Newberg-Dundee Police Chief Brian Casey was also accused of modifying a department shotgun for personal use.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – A New York man convicted of luring teenage girls to Connecticut and prostituting them out of a motel has been sentenced to 17½ years in federal prison. Prosecutors said Edward Thomas lured a 16-year-old and 17-year-old from their home in Oregon in 2012 to prostitute them out of a motel in Connecticut. Co-defendant Kayla Walters pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor and is awaiting sentencing.
