PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – Helicopters are dumping thousands of pounds of wood mulch on Oregon’s Malheur National Forest three months after a wildfire tore through the area. The East Oregonian reports that the mulch is supposed to slow soil erosion and prevent flooding through the fall and winter. A forest deputy fire staff member says mulch will help keep the ground stable and limit the speed that water drains into the creek.

SEATTLE (AP) – Chipotle now says eight restaurants, not six, have been tied to the E. coli outbreak in Washington state and Oregon. The company voluntarily closed 43 restaurants in the Northwest after health officials alerted the Mexican food chain to the outbreak. So far, 37 people have tested positive for the strain of E. coli connected with the outbreak. Scientists say they identified the specific microorganism responsible, which they believe was carried on fresh produce such as lettuce or tomatoes.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A newly disclosed report says a state technology manager who leaked former Gov. John Kitzhaber’s personal emails had no authority to direct the seizure of computers from the governor’s office. The report shows the grab of computers was orchestrated by state technology workers without consulting lawyers or prosecutors, and customary steps to preserve evidence were not followed. The report was obtained by The Oregonian through a public records request.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A man accused of firebombing a Corvallis mosque five years ago was convicted of a federal hate crime charge. Cody Seth Crawford pleaded “no contest” yesterday to a charge of damaging religious property. Prosecutors will ask that he be sentenced to five years of probation.
