Sailors fall in volleyball opener; Vikings begin on the court Thursday; Emeralds ice fifth straight win

The Mapleton Sailors dropped both of their Mountain West League volleyball matches to start the season last night.

The opened with a three-set loss to the McKenzie Eagles, then wrapped up with another three-set loss; this one to the Siletz Valley Warriors.  The Warriors lost an earlier match to the Eagles.   The Sailors will be in Lowell tomorrow for a Mountain West League match against the Devils.  That will be followed by a non-league contest against Oak Hill.

Emeralds pick up fifth straight win

Dylan Cease struck out eight batters in five innings of work and picked up the win as the Eugene Emeralds beat the Tri-City Dust Devils 7-5 last night at PK Park.  The 20-year old right hander; the top prospect in the Chicago Cubs organization; allowed only two hits and one unearned run as the Emeralds picked up their fifth straight win.  Game three of the five game series against the Devils is this evening.
