Athlete of the Year; Ducks Advance; Thompson Honored

Ducks Defend National Championship

The Ducks will be defending their national championship title on the links.  They successfully moved past the #1 seeded Vanderbilt yesterday afternoon after disposing of Oklahoma state yesterday morning.  The men’s golf team persevered through a tough morning round led by Freshman of the year Norman Xiong.  They begin the championship round at noon Pacific Time today.

High School Athletes Honored

Ten student athletes from Siuslaw and Mapleton High Schools will be recognized tonight as the finalists for the Coast Radio/Siuslaw News/Sports Club Athletes of the Year.  Continuing a tradition begun in 1989, one boy and one girl will be given this year’s award.   Finalist for the boy’s Athlete of the Year recognition include Hunter Simington from Mapleton; along with Jared Brandt, Trent Reavis, Brogan Cornish, Jack Pickell, and Richard Huff from Siuslaw.  Finalist for the girl’s Athlete of the Year recognition are Celie Mans, Destinie Tatum, Claire Waggoner and Carissa Oliver, all of Siuslaw.  In all, 38 different students were presented with either the Athlete of the Week or Honorable Mention between September and May.

Held at Siuslaw High School, doors open this evening at 5:30 p.m. The recognition dessert hosted by the Siuslaw Athletic Boosters.   There is no charge for admission and the evening is open to all.

Beavers Pac 12 Academic Honors

16 Beaver baseball players received Pac 12 All-Academic Honors including 3 first team selections in Max Engelbrekt, Jack Anderson, and Jake Thompson.  Of the 16 players named, two are also eligible for Academic All-America Honors.  Jack Anderson and Jake Thompson.
